Charlotte, NC – Currently locked into second place in the stout I-Meck conference, Vance (18-4) continued it’s strong season Monday night with an 81-58 defeat over Lake Norman Monday night at home. Tonight, the team heads on the road for a showdown with conference-leading North Meck (21-1), which has not lost to a North Carolina team all season. Here are five takeaways from last night’s impressive victory over the Wildcats.
1. The emergence of Daniel Sanford. After a limited role as a freshman last season, the 6’8
2. Trey Green’s shooting ability. There’s not a lot of freshman who can quietly give you 20 points on any given night. The combo-guard has spaced the offense with his amazing ability to spot up for the baseline corner three and handle the basketball with ease.
3. Vance is way ahead of schedule. With a nucleus of young talent that includes two freshman and one sophomore, many thought Vance would be in the first phase of a minimum two year building plan. Throw that out the window.
4. Multiple ball handlers. Lake Norman played some high 1-2-2 zone late in the game Monday night to give the Cougars a different look defensively. Ultimately the Cougars, who play a lot of three-guard sets, were able to navigate through the zone finding Trey Green in the corner oft wide-open looks from three.
5. Head Coach Brian Frasier. Now in his sixth season, head coach Brian Frasier has done a superb job of maximizing the talent on his roster. It will be interesting to see over the next few years just how far he can take a group which only appears to be scratching the surface.
